Furkid of the Week

Featured Furkids – Rex and Cody

Rex and Cody are like apple pie and ice cream, you just can’t have one without the other and they are so darn sweet! The boys have lived together their entire lives. They were transfered to us from Souther Hope Humane Society in late 2012 when they stopped their operations.

Amiable, energetic Rex (left) is a debonair 12-pound three-year-old black Yorkshire Terrier/Chihuahua Mix who arrived at Small Dog Rescue with his BFF and brother (from another litter but same parents) Cody Black (right). Cody looks more like their mom, a Chihuahua, and Rex looks more like their dad, a Yorkie. The brothers adore and depend on each other. They eat and drink out of the same bowls and clean each other before going to sleep in the same bed. Rex is a cute little boy, with wispy black fur and winning ways. Rex loves snuggles, playtime and other dogs as well as people. Rex has great house manners, loves a spin in the car and is always ready for a good walk. . He is happy and healthy and sheds very little. Rex knows how to love already – he’s learned from a lifetime with his brother. He’s ready to take that love into a new family where snuggles and giggles and TLC will be with him forever.

Since these boys are a pair their adoption fees will be reduced to ensure they can go home together. Please apply today to give these boys the home they deserve or e-mail adopt@smalldoghumane.org to arrange a meet and greet!

Featured Dog: Sam Spade

Sam Spade, a three-year-old Bassett Hound/Beagle Mix, lost his home through no fault of his own – he was abandoned when his owner was evicted. Now the blonde-and-white guy is on the lookout – seeking just the right new home to be his forever place. When he came to SmallDog Rescue, his skin was in horrible shape due in part to neglect. He’s bouncng back and looking great these days. This is what his foster mom has to say about him:

Sammy is very easy-going, laid back, doesn’t ask for much. It seems that whatever he gets in life he is content with. Very Zen-like! But he does have another side to him that is starting to emerge – he can be playful with other dogs, enjoys chewing on a nice antler or nylabone, can howl for snacks or dinner when encouraged by his canine brothers. Does he run? Not exactly – but he can get a nice Bassett Hound lope going every now and then.

He loves to go on walks though probably his favorite activity is napping. He’s very smart and would make a great companion for anyone, including first-timers, families with small children, apartment-dwellers, homes with or without fences, senior citizens, only-dog homes, probably even homes shared with cats (though we don’t know this for a fact). All he needs is a family willing to look past his freckly, superficial exterior to see the gorgeousness within, a glimpse of which can be seen in his soulful, loving eyes.

Rascal | Furkid of the Week

Our little fluffy Rascal came to us as a kitten in May of 2006 with his brother, Bonkers.  They were both feral and, therefore, not very warm to humans.  Rascal has weathered the domesticated storm quite well.  It may have taken quite a while, but he is no longer shy or wary of humans.  In fact, he is now the cat to welcome you into Room 10.  He sits by the door and when you come in he wants lots of attention.  He’s come such a long way.  Rascal was also ill for a little while, but he is fully recovered and is doing fantastic.

Please feel free to make an appointment to come by Room 10 at the main shelter to meet him.  Or apply to adopt him today.  Rascal is cat number 6426.

Lily | Furkid of the Week

Since we had such great fortune this month in having two all-white boys adopted together (Linus and Victor), we thought we’d highlight one of our absolutely gorgeous all-white girls, Lily.

Cala lilies, water lilies, lilies of the valley — they are all delicate and exquisite-looking white flowers. And so is this little girl. I mean, just look at her! She really embodies her name.

Lily is graceful, beautiful, and smart. She has been with us since 2009 and is 3-years-old. She is an all-white short hair and unique in the sense that her eyes are two different shades. She is very playful and vocal; loves attention and conversation. Lily will find her way next to you and she will make the other cats get out of her way to ensure she gets all your attention. She would love to find her forever home as an only cat.

Little Miss Lily is cat #9160. You can make an appointment to come meet her at the shelter, you can apply now to adopt her, or you can come meet her this weekend at our Open House!

Mango | Furkid of the Week

Mango is always one of the first cats to greet you at the door of room 1-2-3. Just like her tropical fruit namesake, she is a brilliant rich orange color and full of sweetness. This very affectionate kitty absolutely adores attention and will sit by your side until your pet her or hold her. She will make someone a great lap cat!

Mango came to Furkids in 2008 with her sisters, Peachy and Tangerine. Peachy has since been adopted but Mango and Tangerine are still seeking their forever homes. It would be nice to have them adopted together, but it is not necessary.

If you would like to meet Mango, please make an appointment to come in to the shelter to meet her. Or, you can apply to adopt her today!

Tyler | Furkid of the Week

This week’s Furkid is Tyler — a beautiful,  gentle, low-key, affectionate Flame Point (aka Color Point) Siamese cat.  Tyler lives in Room 9 with some pretty heavy-pawed alpha cats, but he wanders around the room softly and quietly — seeking out the humans in the room who might be cleaning or visiting — and just wants to be noticed and lavished with affection.  He will sneak up on you, find your hand, and start rubbing his head against it wanting you to pet him.  If you turn your back to clean another section of the room, before you know it, there’s Tyler right in front of you…following your hands.  He’s such a sweetheart.

It’s nice that Tyler gets the spotlight so close to Adopt a Less Adoptable Pet Week, because he has a brother, Riley, with whom he must be adopted.  Riley is a great catch, too!  His personality is more characteristic of the Color Point breed than Tyler’s, and you can watch this short video from Animal Planet to learn more about Color Points (the video is preceded by a brief ad).  Tyler and Riley are a classic example of two brothers who have much in common but remain individuals.  Tyler is quiet and subtle while Riley is talkative and direct, and both just want attention and affection.

Riley

We know its challenging adopting one cat, let alone two, but these two are worth it.  They are really great cats!  These bonded brothers were adopted for a brief period within the last year, but were returned to Furkids.  They would do best in a house with no other cats, but if you think Tyler and Riley would make a great addition to your family and you already have cats, then we simply recommend you follow the guidelines for properly introducing new cats into a home with other cats.

Tyler is cat #8100 (and Riley is #8101).  Please consider making an appointment to come by the shelter to meet them.  Or apply to adopt them today!

Shadow | Furkid of the Week

Look at this handsome guy.

Shadow is a little over a year old and is a beautiful, friendly kitty who loves to play with other kitties.  He’s having fun at Furkids wrestling with his buddies but would love to go home with someone who has another playful kitty.  He’ll bring you hours of entertainment and love!

As is often the case with some of our animals, there is not much information in Shadow’s file about his background.  We hope that some of our volunteers will comment here if they have any more insight about his personality.

Shadow is cat number 11118.  Please consider making an appointment to come by the shelter to meet him.  Or apply to adopt him today!

How To Make Your Ex Girlfriend Want You Back Quickly – This week’s “cat of the week” is a DOG!  Yes, Furkids also has dogs available for adoption.  Meet Zenyetta.  She is a young, energetic, sweet, playful, smart Shepherd mix with a beautiful brindle coat — and she is in desperate need of either a FOSTER FAMILY or a forever home.  A Furkid volunteer found her in her front yard

one day with a broken leg.  Our veterinarian set her leg in a cast and she is much better now.  Zenyetta is house trained and learning commands.  She absolutely loves attention and will reward you with lots of dog kisses.

If you are an experienced dog foster family, please consider taking Zenyetta into your home until she finds her forever family.  She needs space to run and play.  She also will benefit from bonding more closely with people.  She is about 6-8 months old.  You will want to be present when she is around children since she gets very excited during playtime. Furkids is prepared to pay for two weeks of hands-on training when we find a qualified foster home for her.  To apply to foster her, please complete our volunteer application.

If you would be interested in adopting Zenyetta, please complete our dog adoption application.

We are asking our Furkids network of friends to please get this message out to all your far-reaching dog-loving audiences.  We really want to find a place for Zenyetta to call her own — either a temporary foster home or a forever home.  Thank you!

Buffy | Furkid of the Week

Bonnie Ford was a Furkids supporter and avid friend to cats.  Sadly, Ms. Ford passed away in May of 2011.  The cats under her care came to Furkids and are looking for new homes.  Buffy is one of the cats in that special group.

Buffy is a quiet cat and not one to immediately draw your attention.  Instead, she will perch herself on a cat tree and stare at you until you notice her.  Once you do, you may just be hooked.  When held, Buffy likes to drape her front paws over your shoulder…and stay there!

She has had some dental issues and several of her teeth have been extracted.  This causes her to drool a little bit.  She is very well accustomed to being around other cats and would do well in a multi-cat home.  Please help Buffy (and her mates!) move forward by considering her for adoption and giving her a new home.

Buffy is cat #11219.  Click here to apply to adopt her.

Yang Yang | Furkid of the Week

Talk about success stories!  When Yang Yang and his brother, Yin Yin, were rescued from a Buckhead feral colony in August 2006, his right eye was already infected.  The Furkids team did all they could but were unable to save the eye.  The rigors of taking medicine and undergoing surgery took its toll on the already timid Yang Yang, and it was a long time before he warmed to human companionship.  He adjusted well to the loss of his eye, and these days you will find Yang Yang to be one of the first cats to greet you when you enter his room.

A little over five years old, Yang Yang is a handsome and sweet loving boy who loves to be brushed. He would do best in a home with older children or no children at all. Small dogs would be OK. Yang Yang and Yin Yin need to be adopted together and have been waiting too long a forever home. In return for giving the two brothers the home that has long eluded them, you will be rewarded with two loving souls that will help to make your life whole.  Please consider adopting Yang Yang and Yin Yin.
