What is a virtual foster?
A Virtual Foster sponsors one of SmallDog Rescue’s dogs monthly. SmallDog Rescue is committed to our dogs for life. This means that when a dog is returned as a senior, we take everything that comes with it – heart murmurs, cancer, arthritis, etc. Below you will find dogs that have cancer, still won’t let their foster parents hold them, have chronic health issues, and some dogs that for reasons we can’t even explain, have yet to find their forever home.
How does it work?
Basic care for our dogs averages out to about $25.00 a month per dog; we care for more than 80 dogs. Many of these dogs cost more than average because of their medical issues. Many of these dogs will have unforeseen costs in the form of new medical issues. You can sponsor a dog in one of 3 ways:
When you become a virtual foster parent for the month or year, you will be acknowledged as a Virtual Foster on the dog’s profile until they are adopted.
If you would like to make a general donation for any of these dogs instead of becoming a Virtual Foster, visit here.
On Feb. 27 Dawn was found at an Atlanta Wal-Mart only 24 lbs and with a temperature of 92 (very low). She was infested with mange, yeast, heartworms, and intestinal parasites; a true face of neglect and abuse. We were not sure she would live through the night. Since then she has been receiving vitamin supplements, antibiotics, probiotics, high quality food, lots of love and in 13 days is up to 36 lbs! She has warmed up to people and learned what it is like to love and be loved. She is under veterinary care to monitor her anemia, weight gain, and overall health. She will begin treatment for mange and heartworms when she is back to normal health. To follow Dawn’s progress please follow her page: Fighting for Dawn.
Ony is a sweet 8-year-old mixed breed. We think she might be part Whippet due to her narrow head. Ony is about 40 lbs and LOVES long walks. She is curious and loves to explore. It can take her a while to warm up to new people, but once she does she will love you forever. She has been with SDR for almost 2 years! She currently lives at our facility. We are trying very hard to place her in a foster home, or adoptive home, but so far no luck. Ony has no medical issues; she is just shy.
Bren is a very special, loving Miniature Poodle mix named for the founder of Small Dog Rescue. At 4 1/2 pounds, she is 11 years old, but incredibly spry with a great spirit. The fluffy gal has a great attitude despite being left in a carrier at the side of the road. She is a real symbol of the caring rescue work that SDR does every day. Quiet little Bren, who is blind due to glaucoma, loves to be held, ride in a car and go on outings. She walks like a giraffe, sits like a squirrel, can walk on her hind legs like a human, and perks her ear when you kiss her cheek. After that activity, she sleeps well through the night. Bren needs an adult only super caring home now and in the future. She deserves that and so much more.
Chloe Cassiopeia is a sweet female Dachshund. She weighs 15 pounds and is eight-plus years old. An owner surrender, Chloe lifts her soulful eyes looking for the love and comfort of a home — for always. Chloe is a very special girl. She has a thyroid condition that requires daily medication. Chloe needs a forever home where she will be cherished for all her days.
Hawkeye - Miniature Pinscher
Oh Hawkeye! One minute, snuggles and kisses. The next, a world to explore and conquer! Hawkeye is a young, 3-year-old Min Pin/Chihuahua mix. This lively boy is bright, inquisitive and full of energy. Hawkeye is a big dog in a tiny package. True to his breed, he needs to size up strangers before he’s sure he can trust them, and he’ll let you know if he doesn’t. But once he does trust you – wow, what a lover! You have a loyal companion for life. Hawkeye is best suited for a calm, dog-savvy, adult-only home. Experience with the breed is a plus. No children, now or in the future. Applicants may meet this special little guy by appointment. Because he can be a bit of a handful at such a stressful place as adoptions, he’s stuck around longer than he should! Thank you Robbie and Marcie for being Hawkeye’s virtual foster parents.
Rudolph, AKA Rudy, aka “Rudy-Roo”, is a sweet, loving chihuahua mix who loves nothing more than a belly-rub snuggle. He is a happy, playful boy who loves to be with his people and will play with other dogs. He is cautious around strangers, but Rudy-roo loves everyone when he gets to know them. Rudy is twelve years young and has a heart murmur which requires daily medicine. Otherwise he is a great little lap buddy with lots of love to give. Thank you Susan and Connor O. and Susan H. for being Rudy’s virtual foster parents. Rudy was also sponsored in memory of Precious by Jerusha S.
