Become a Virtual Foster

What is a virtual foster?
A Virtual Foster sponsors one of SmallDog Rescue's Long Term Foster Dogs or Permanent Fosters. SmallDog Rescue is committed to our dogs for life. This means that when a dog is returned as a senior, we take everything that comes with it - heart murmurs, cancer, arthritis, etc. Not only are we responsible for returned adopted dogs, we have many dogs that we take in knowing they will probably not be adopted any time soon. We are a no-kill shelter. The commonly agreed upon definition of "no kill" is that adoptable and rehabilitatable dogs are not euthanized. Many of these dogs do not fall in that category, but we stand by our belief that all dogs deserve a chance at a happy life regardless of how old or "adoptable" they are. Below you will find dogs that have cancer, dogs that still won't let their foster parents hold them, dogs with chronic health issues, and some dogs that for reasons we can't even explain, have yet to find their forever home.

How does it work?
Basic care (food, shelter, annual vaccinations and heartworm and flea prevention) for our dogs averages out to about $25.00 a month. You can sponsor a dog through either twelve monthly donations of $25.00 or through a single donation of $300.00 for the year. Many of these dogs cost more than average because of their medical issues, so some need more than one foster. Each dog has the number of fosters he or she needs to cover their current costs under their picture. If the dog you would like to Virtually Foster already has the number of foster they need, you are still welcome to foster them. Many of these dogs will have unforeseen costs in the form of new medical issues. All monies generated from the Virtual Fostering program will be put toward the care of our long term dogs. What does it mean?
When you sponsor a dog for a year (through the monthly subscription or a $300.00 donation), you will recieve a thank you package from your dog and an update every six months for as long as you sponsor the dog. And, you'll be acknowledged as a Virtual Foster on this page. Who needs a Virtual Foster? See below!

This smart, sweet boy, a 5 year old and about 23lbs., had been living on his own for quite some time, fending for himself the best that he could. Fortunately, he is coming around to "domestic" life and is trusting his foster mom more each and every day. It took him two years, but now his foster mom can finally pet him without gloves and he follows her everywhere. He is a healthy boy right now but he does need to be sedated to be groomed (usually he's shaved down to maximize the time bewteen groomings), which more than doubles the cost.
